The Seljuks of Rum built monumental stone buildings of elegantly simple design and harmonious proportion, for the most part severely plain, but with bursts of elaborate decoration around doorways.
The Seljuk Star
It is known that the octagonal star, which is one of the main motifs of the Seljukian culture and art, was widely used in the Middle Eastern civilizations and the Islamic World. It was thought to symbolize 8 gates of heaven which refer to 8 principles of Islam. According to religious resources, those 8 principles are compassion and kindness, patience, righteousness, keeping secrets, loyalty, knowing its poverty and inability, generosity and being grateful for the lord.
